Useful Links for Tolland County Area Information

The University of Connecticut is located right in the middle of Tolland County, in
the region of the state often referred to as "The Quiet Corner." It can be quiet,
with rural country roads, bucolic New England scenery, classic stonewall-lined
farms, and hiking and recreational opportunities everywhere. It can also be
pretty exciting, with an assortment of great restaurants, cultural activities,
entertainment venues, and New England's "Rising Star"- Hartford, just a 1/2
hour drive away. If you're relocating to the UConn area, or just want to
familiarize yourself with what this part of the world has to offer, the following
links should give you a good idea. The list isn't comprehensive, and if you think
there is something I should add here, please let me know. If you have any
questions about the area, give me a call, or email me.

    University/CT Area Links - General

University of Connecticut - The official University
website with links to all of the academic programs,
    campus housing, and athletics information.
Connecticut Tourism - The official state tourism
website, with links to all of the area attractions, as well
    as a state-wide events calendar.
Jerry Dougherty's Connecticut - An incredible
collection of photographs from an amateur CT
photographer. If you want to know what the area looks
like, check out the area towns in Jerry's photos!
Windham Hospital - The primary hospital serving the
    UConn area and points South.
Rockville Hospital - The primary hospital serving the
    areas North of campus.
Storrs Center - An ambitious and exciting project
planned to create a multi-use downtown center across
from campus on Route 195. It is due to break ground
this year, and is slated for completion in 2012.

    Community Government Websites

    School Information

Connecticut Department of Education - This site
indexes all of the statistical information for every school
district in the state. Just click on the town you're
interested in for a report that outlines SAT scores,
teacher/student ratios, special programs, etc. Look at
the bottom of the page for magnet and charter schools.
Great Schools Website - An ambitious project
providing information on all schools, as well as a forum
for parents, teachers, and principals to submit
    comments and reviews.

    Restaurants & Food

Some of my personal favorites- The Bacon
Cheeseburger at the Red Rock Cafe, the award-
winning wings at Bidwell Tavern, the meatiest and most
flavorful wings in town at Wings over Storrs, the 4-
cheese Pizza at Willington Pizza (Tolland County's best
pizza for many years running), the Indian Buffet at Wing
Express, and the enchilada combo dinners at
Margarita's. Check them all out at the links below.

Need Food Now - Links to local restaurants and their
    menus.
Campus Food - All of the local restaurants that Need
    Food Now missed.
Willington Pizza - Home of the 4-cheese pizza. For
something different, try the Seafood Casino Pizza or
    the Taco Pizza.
Margarita's - Great atmosphere, great food (always
    served piping hot).
Willimantic Brewing Company - The Brewpub is a
popular grad student hangout housed in an historic
1909 post office in downtown Willimantic.
Altnaveigh Inn- Voted "the most Romantic Dining
Experience in Tolland County," the Altnaveigh offers
fine dining in an elegant classic New England setting-
the place to dine when you're trying to impress!
Willimantic Food Co-op - Very popular with the
University crowd, the coop offers fresh organic
produce, homeopathic remedies, local dairy products,
bulk foods, and all of your usual grocery needs.
Storrs Farmer's Market - In season, the Farmer's
Market runs at E.O. Smith high school and offers some
of the freshest local produce in the area.

    Recreation & Entertainment

Joshua's Trust - One of the largest local land trusts,
helping to keep the Quiet Corner quiet. They sponsor
lots of hiking trails, many near the University, and have
maps and guides on their site.
Conserving Tolland - The Tolland land trust- only a
few trails so far, but some nice maps and guides on
    their site.
Last Green Valley - The organization supporting the
National Park Service's Quinebaug and Shetucket
National Heritage Corridor. From a night satellite view,
the last green valley is one of the few dark gaps in the
    Boston-Washington Megalopolis corridor. Sponsors
many events, including the very popular Walking
    Weekends held in October.
Mansfield's Parks - Mansfield maintains many
interesting and scenic hiking trails and recreation
areas. Guides and maps (pdf format) on site.
Willimantic River Alliance - The 25-mile Willimantic
River offers some great fishing, canoeing, and
kayaking. A whitewater park featuring class 4 and 5
runs is being developed in Willimantic.
Skungamaug Golf Club - The closest full-scale golf
course to campus. 18 holes plus a practice facility. A
little short, but very scenic and challenging, it was voted
the 5th best public course in the state by CT Golfer
    Magazine.
Golf Land - If mini-golf is more your speed, Golf Land
is the place to go. Also features batting cages, go-
    carts, and an arcade.
Windham Aviation - Take to the air and learn to fly.
Also scenic flights at $125 for 3 passengers.
SkyDive Connecticut - For the bolder and more
daring, one of the best New England skydiving venues
is right in Ellington- about a half hour from campus.

    Newspapers

Willimantic Chronicle - Access to an online e-version
of the paper is available, but you have to subscribe (not
free) and set up an account. Their local shopper
    newspaper is available free.
The Reminder - A great community free newspaper.
The full version of the paper is available online for free.
Which edition covers which town is not always
immediately apparent, so choose a few to find what
you're looking for. (Mansfield is covered by the
    Broadcaster North)
Journal Inquirer - Published in Manchester- it does
cover most of the Northern end of the UConn area.
Most stories are available online, as well as a
    classifieds site.
Hartford Courant - The largest newspaper in the
state. It doesn't tend to cover much out towards the
University of Connecticut's direction (unless it's a cost
overrun on a construction project), but it's a great
source of information for Connecticut in general.

    Cultural Events, Organizations, & Businesses

Tolland County Art Association - Sponsoring art
shows and public exhibitions, the Art Association holds
regular meetings and has 2 open galleries.
Birch Mountain Pottery - A pottery studio/gallery and
educational classroom in Tolland, Birch Mountain is
great place for unique gifts crafted by local artisans.
    Victorian Neighborhood Association - Willimantic
boasts one of the largest concentrations of surviving
Victorian architecture outside of San Francisco. The
    Neighborhood Association sponsors regular meetings
and special events to increase awareness and foster
preservation of the local architectural heritage.
Third Thursday Streetfest - Willimantic's downtown
extravaganza, held every third Thursday during the
good weather, features food and entertainment lining
the sides of Main Street, which is shut down to vehicle
    traffic for the event.
WILI - The voice of Willimantic. WILI 1400 AM offers a
full range of news, sports, and weather, along with local
features, and hits form the 70, 80s, and 90s. Some of
their broadcast is available on a webcast.
Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts - The
Jorgensen, right on campus, hosts top name concerts,
comedians, and musicals. Tickets are available for
    purchase online.
